TOKYO- Prime Minister Naoto Kan tried Friday to withstand intense pressure from many lawmakers to step down in the foreseeable future, saying he cannot walk off the job when thousands are still suffering from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
‘‘There are so many things we’re doing and I can’t give up on them,’’ Kan told a parliamentary session. ‘‘I believe what’s needed for a politician is fulfilling one’s responsibility until the very end.’‘
